In my limited knowledge, writing is not merely a language skill but more of an ability to communicate effectively. Therefore, I believe that the ability to think will help master writing skill. To do so, I could think of the following as the 3 most important things one should learn to master this skill.
1. Practice tips and strategies which will improve your ability to communication better.
2. Get a control over the language which will directly improve your writing skill (both in speed as well as proficiency).
3. Understand and use this skill to your advantage in various aspects of work.
Working in a creative agency, there are two vital writing activities which I do as a part of my work which are as follows:
1. Business Communication
Like in any of the new age businesses, business communication plays a vital role in my organization. Primary mode of business communication is through email. In my opinion, drafting a clear-crisp-concise email is the key component of the process. The email can be as straight forward as a one-line status reply email or as complex as a negotiation email to close a deal. The challenge in the whole process is that every communication is unique and has to be specific to a client, for a situation and has to address the purpose.
2. Website Content Planning
Website content planning plays an important part in one of the major services of my organization, viz. website creation for brands or companies. Website content planning is typically an art to effectively organize relevant content for the site’s viewers from customers’ point of interest.
How challenging could blogging be?
Blogging is one writing skill which I find most difficult to do. Yet I must admit that it is also the most interesting writing task to do. The challenge starts from choosing the title of the blog itself. The title of the blog has to be a topic of interest to you (as you are going to write about it) as well as the reader (whom the blog in intended for). Therefore, choosing a good topic makes the rest of the process easier.
Once the topic is chosen, ideate to put your thoughts together and make an elaboration on the topic. Make sure you have all the vital content which would make the blog sensible. Then the content has to be organized and presented in such a fashion which creates an interest to the reader. Add visual content wherever appropriate. Only then you are good to publish it to your followers.
Despite the odds, I have recently started writing one post every week since my 25th birthday. I publish my writings at www.russel.in, where I write about my life experiences, travel stories and any other random stuff which strikes my mind. Yes, I am loving it.
Writing is essentially a thinking skill – that is what makes writing Challenging, but it is also what makes writing such an important part of professional excellence.
